Cheap Fashion JewelryQ.What things do you love that are cheap or fake but look really expensive? Do you buy things at Target or Wall mart and mix them with designer duds? Would you wear fake cubic zirconia that looked like the real thing and spend the cash on a trip instead? Would you buy a copy of a designer bag and pass it off as real if you could? A.I buy quite a bit of cheap/moderately-priced clothing. I also buy inexpensive costume jewelry, and lately, inexpensive bags. I've got various clothing items in faux leather and suede, and -- as I noted the other day -- have recently bought a few designer knock-off bags. I'm not sure I could tell you which items look expensive and which do not. I can't tell whether the things other people are wearing are expensive. I think people sometimes assume that my jewelry or clothing is more expensive than it is, because I'm of an age and income level where the real thing would be affordable. Sometimes if someone says, "That's a nice leather jacket." I'll say, "Thanks -- I like it too, but it's just fake leather from Fashion Bug." Other times -- it I don't know the person well -- I just say thanks. I'm not trying to fool anyone. I've just lately learned that Target has some nice clothes, and have bought a few things (plus some gym wear, which is nice but a different sort of thing). I wear them mixed with whatever I want. I don't have any high-end designer clothes, really -- Ralph Lauren is about as "designer" as it gets for me. I haven't ever bought clothes at Walmart but may check it out, given a few recommendations I've heard here. I haven't liked the stores when I've been in so have only been a few times -- never even looked at the clothes. Most of my less-expensive clothing comes from Old Navy, Dress Barn, Fashion Bug, and Casual Corner Annex -- all with lots of stores in the area. My moderately-priced clothing comes from department stores (brands like Sag Harbor or Koret). The slightly higher-end things are from department stores, Loehmanns, or TJ Maxx. And I've also found some goodies lately at Ross Dress for Less. (I just noticed a sign in their window that said there's a 10% discount there on Tuesdays for people 55 and over. I'll have to go there on Tuesdays, since I'm 55.) I have no problem with CZ jewely, and I have some. Lately I haven't been wearing it -- or diamonds either. I'm liking chunkier stuff. (I don't have any sizable real diamonds. My wedding ring is an heirloom from my husband's family, but not at all large. I do have some nice jewelry with colored stones and opals and such, but don't often wear it. I've lately bought a few, but I can't imagine lying to anyone about them. First, almost none of my friends would know a designer bag or a copy of one if they saw it. There are a couple of young women at the gym who might know stuff like this, or women I know casually through wine tasting groups I belong to. If one of them said, "That's a nice Gucci bag.", I'd say, "Thanks, but it's just a copy." (I'm thinking, though, of one woman I know slightly who's an incredible snob and really into showing off her wealth. If she was fooled, I might let her stay that way . I would never claim the bag to be what it wasn't, though, even to her.
